Answer the Call of the Wild: Summer Safari Weekend Roars Into The Lakes
Some weekends you plan. Others you remember for years.
Summer Safari Weekend at The Lakes RV & Cabin Resort is the second kind. From Friday, August 7 through Sunday, August 9, 2026, the whole resort turns into a jungle-themed playground where kids become explorers, families slow down together, and every corner of the park has something new to discover.
Tucked in Maysville, North Carolina — a short drive from Jacksonville, New Bern, Emerald Isle, and the Crystal Coast — The Lakes is the kind of family RV resort where a themed weekend actually feels like something. Not gimmicky. Not overproduced. Just three days of easy summer fun the whole family can enjoy at their own pace.
Here is what the weekend has in store, and why so many of our returning families already have it circled on the calendar.
The Safari Scavenger Hunt Kicks Things Off
Every great adventure needs a mission. On Summer Safari Weekend, that mission comes with a clue sheet.
Our Safari Scavenger Hunt sends kids around the resort in search of hidden clues, jungle friends, and their next big find. It is the kind of activity that gets even the shyest little explorers running from station to station, checking off spots, and coming back to camp with a story to tell.
Parents love it because it burns off morning energy. Kids love it because it feels like a real adventure. Grandparents love it because they can walk along, take pictures, and enjoy watching the whole thing unfold.
Craft Time and the Stuffed Animal Adoption Corner
Not every safari has to be loud. Between activities, families can drop by our craft station to make personalized animal masks — perfect for the Jungle Dance Party later that night. It is a low-key stop that gives kids a chance to get creative, and it usually turns into one of those quiet weekend moments parents secretly treasure.
Nearby, our Stuffed Animal Adoption Corner is set up all weekend long. Little ones can pick out a new plush friend to bring back to the cabin or RV — a soft, snuggly souvenir that ends up in the car on the way home, at bedtime for the next month, and eventually in a photo album years later.
The Jungle Dance Party
Once the sun starts to dip, the energy shifts. Our Jungle Dance Party turns the resort into an open-air celebration where little explorers can show off their best animal moves, take over the dance floor with their new masks, and burn off every last bit of afternoon lemonade.
It is fun for the kids, funny for the parents, and one of those events where everyone ends up smiling. Even the ones who swore they would just watch.
Wagon Rides and Movie Night Under the Stars
Saturday afternoon means classic wagon rides around the resort — a chance to slow the pace, wave to neighbors, and see the park from a new angle. It is a small thing, but it is one of those touches that makes The Lakes feel like a real community, not just a place to park.
When night falls, we bring out the big screen for an outdoor movie under the stars. Grab a blanket, some popcorn, and cozy up with the family for a lakeside movie night that feels the way summer is supposed to feel.
Between the Adventures: Pool Time, Fishing, and Lake Life

Themed weekends at The Lakes work because they are layered on top of everything the resort already offers. So between scavenger hunts and dance parties, families can slide right into the parts of camping they love most.
Head to the resort-style pool. Grab a fishing rod and try your luck on the lake — see all our on-site fishing and activities for ideas. Take the kids to the playground. Rent a golf cart and cruise the park. Let the dogs run at the fenced Bark & Run Park — one of the reasons families call us a favorite pet-friendly camping spot. Set up chairs by the sandy beach and watch the afternoon roll by.
The whole point is that no one has to do everything. Some families will chase every activity. Others will pick a few and spend the rest of the weekend hammocked between two trees. Both are the right way to do it.
Where to Stay: RV Sites, Cabins, Tents, and Park Models

Summer Safari Weekend is only as good as the base camp waiting for you at the end of the day — and that is where the ways you can stay at The Lakes shines.
Bring the rig and settle into one of our spacious RV sites with the hookups you need and the room to spread out. Prefer a soft bed and A/C? Book one of our cozy glamping cabins. Traveling light? Tent sites keep it simple. Extended stays and park models are also available for guests looking for something roomier or longer term.
Whichever way you camp, you are close to the lake, close to the activities, and just a short walk from every corner of the weekend.
A Family RV Resort That Actually Feels Like One
Themed weekends only work at parks that show up for them, and Summer Safari Weekend is one of the ones we plan hardest for. It is designed for families with young kids, families with tweens who claim they are too cool for a scavenger hunt (they are not), and multigenerational groups who want something for every age.
If you have been searching for a kid-friendly weekend getaway near Jacksonville, New Bern, or the Crystal Coast — this is the one. Explore our things to do near Maysville, bring the crew, unplug from the noise of everyday life, and let the resort do the entertaining.
